Hair Product Haul

It’s been too lot since I wrote a blog post, and I’m sorry! I would like to say that I was busy, but honestly I just got a little lazy. Anyways I’m back! I recently did a mini haul of some natural hair products. I got them all at Walmart and I can’t wait to try them out and see the results!

1. I’ve heard great things about As I Am. I started using some of their products last year and I’m excited to use this cowash.

As I Am Cocunut Cowash $7.97

2. I’ve never used anything by Creme of Nature, but I did some Youtube research and saw some great feedback. I’m going to use this as a hold for my twists, while conditioning my hair as well, obviously.

Processed with VSCO with hb1 preset
Creme of Nature Argan Oil Intensive Conditioning Treatment $4.98

3. I have used Cantu and trust their products. I normally get their curling gel, but I thought about trying out their growth/strengthening treatment. My hair has grown a lot since my big chop, but I want to see how much this can help my hair grow faster.

Processed with VSCO with a5 preset
Cantu Grow Strong Strengthening Treatment $3.97

4. My hair can tend to be a little dry at times, so I was very happy to try this conditioning hair mask. I have never used ORS products, so I can’t wait to see the results.

ORS Olive Oil Replenishing Pak $1.26

That’s all for my mini haul. I will try to come back and give reviews on updates on these products once I start using them!

Items to Buy for Back-to-School

I can’t believe it’s already August and school is right around the corner. I had a school program in about mid-July and feel like I didn’t really get to enjoy a full summer. However, I love going back to school shopping and I’m excited about the things that I got for school/my dorm. Here is a list!

  1. Agenda: I got this cute Create 365 Planner at Michaels for 50% off (with my Michaels membership). I love this planner because of the cute designs both outside and the inside pages. I got a bigger one because I use it for both school and social and want to be able to put a lot of info in.

2. Notebooks: I bought this Five Star notebook at Walmart on sale for like $5. I like the multiple subject notebooks because I like being able to put all my notes in one place, and this notebook works perfectly for that. I am taking 6 classes, but have one class where I do not need to take notes, so this notebook is perfect! Also, these notes are college ruled (for anyone who doesn’t know the difference, college ruled notebooks have smaller lines than wide ruled and leave more room for notes)!

3. Pens: I LOVE PENS!! Like really, anyone who knows me knows I am obsessed with pens (my sister knows this all to well). So pen shopping is my favorite activity. You can get pens literally anywhere, so I’m not going to list some places. I prefer .35-8 point pens, so I usually buy those ones!

4. Calculator: Unless you are a math major or planning on taking upper level math classes, you do not really need a hi-tech calculator. I’ve had this graphing one since high school, so I didn’t feel the need to go out and buy a new one. You can find one at Walmart or Amazon. Don’t forget to buy extra batteries just in case!

FullSizeRender 14

5. Stapler: Most people think that they need one, but honestly this came in handy many times. While most of your paperwork is done and turned in online, there are times when you need to staple papers together or need to keep stuff together. Some teachers did not have some in the classroom and I had many people ask to use mine (and my 3-hole puncher).

6. A Binder: I am using one of the same binder I used last year. It doesn’t have to be anything special or expensive. Because I am using a 5-subject binder, I am just using one binder to keep my papers together for all of my subjects.

FullSizeRender 12

7. Scissors: I forgot to bring scissors to school with me last semester, and I ended up regretting it literally the day after I moved onto campus. You might need them for things not school related and don’t want to go around asking people for scissors.

FullSizeRender 13

8. Portable Charger: For someone who forgets things VERY easily, I am glad I bought this. I sometimes forgot to bring my charger with me, so it was nice to gave an extra chargeable device I could bring with me anywhere.

FullSizeRender 8

9. FlashDrive: A flashdrive is always a good thing to have with you wherever you go. It comes in handy when you save something on your computer and need to print it out later.

FullSizeRender 11

10. Sticky Notes: Sticky noes also come in handy when you have to quickly jot something down.

FullSizeRender 3

11. Desk Lamp: I forgot to bring a desk lamp last semester and had a moment when I needed to finish an assignment and my roommate wanted to go to sleep. I ended up using the Christmas lights I had set up. So I made sure to buy one this time around. I bought this one at Walmart for $5 and it apparently doesn’t need a lightbulb (hmm…).

Let me know in the comments what supplies you are excited to buy for school!

Why Cat Grant is the Real Hero on Supergirl

When Supergirl was first announced, I was excited about having an action packed series starring a female hero. Over the decades, female heroes have been more present on the big screen than the small screen. From the multiple portrayals of Catwoman to the amazing women in the X-Men franchise, women Superheroes never truly made it big in television. The 1975-1979 adaptation of Wonder Woman, played by Lynda Willams, is the longest a female hero has been in the spotlight on television.

In the 20th century,  female superheros have only played a supporting role compared to the men. Jane Grey was known for her the fight for her affection between Logan and Scott (Halle Barry kicked ass as Catwoman). In the television, Laurel Lance and Thea Queen’s Canary and Speedy were runner-ups to Dig and Oliver’s characters. Even then, there was always the argument made by Oliver that fighting crime was too dangerous for the women.

With  female heroes being pushed into supporting roles, it was a breath of fresh air when CBS announced their airing of the Supergirl. Finally a girl was getting the spotlight. While Supergirl was truly super (She was stronger and faster than her cousin after all), another female heroine outshined her in the show. The founder and boss of CatCo. Worldwide Media where Supergirl’s alter persona Kara Danvers worked (I still don’t understand how someone can put on glasses, work at a newspaper and automatically become unrecognizable). While Cat is shown as the cold, inconsiderate, power hungry The Devil Wears Prada type of boss, she is also a strong and powerful character.

When Supergirl first emerges, Cat is the first one to hop onto the bandwagon, becoming the spokesperson for her. Cat’s support is truly a beautiful thing. It’s a woman seeing another woman as strong and capable. She doesn’t dismiss her as the rest of the city does, but she builds her up putting more confidence in Supergirl. After seeing how women often put each other down and turn when they should be uniting, having Cat show such support for Supergirl is exhilarating.

Cat is also a strong female role model to look up to. She knows a lot about hard work. She had to push her way through an industry dominated by men. She fought for her company and standing. She never seems to be affected by anything negative people said about her, and if she did, she never showed it. She just kept on going and proving herself. In a recent episode (no spoilers I promise!), Cat was being interviewed on The Talk. Sara Gilbert asked Cat how she felt about being named “the most powerful woman in National City”, Cat quickly corrects her saying she wasn’t named the most powerful woman in Central City, she was named “the most powerful person in Central city”. She wasn’t put in a category with just women, she was chosen out of a category of men and women!

Cat Grant’s tenacity and strength continues to amaze and inspire me. This is a woman who knows what she wants and goes for it. She doesn’t let anyone get in the way of her success. And while everyone is calling her ruthless and cold, it doesn’t stop her from being true to herself. She continues to climb the ladder of success and excels in her work (and she looks damn well doing it!). She is an incredible asset and member to the Supergirl team. I can’t wait to see how her character and her friendship with Supergirl evolves throughout the show. If you haven’t already been tuning in to Supergirl, it’s not too late!

4 TV Shows with Leading Ladies

A couple of year ago, television was a male dominated arena. There few, if any, TV shows that showcased a strong, badass female lead. It wasn’t until recently that this all started to change. Now there is a plethora of Female Strong shows. Shows that display women living their lives and hustling in their careers and their lives. Here are just a  few of my favorite shows featuring some badass boss babes.

Grey’s Anatomy:

Grey’s is the ultimate girlboss show. Meredith has shown women that it’s okay to go after what you want. Her hustle hard attitude shows that there is nothing wrong with wanting a demanding career. Meredith and her cowokers break the stigma that women are supposed to not want demanding jobs and instead stay home and have kids. Christina and Meredith’s friendship is also a big reason why Grey’s is such a great show. They support each there and are always there for each other. They are brutally honest with each other and keep each other in check. As someone who is all for women supporting each other, these two are friendship goals.

Jane the Virgin:

Jane the Virgin is such an underrated show. The shows follows Jane, a 23 year old who’s life is exactly where she wants it to be. She is on her way to becoming a teacher and working on a novel. Her life gets sidetracked when she is accidentally inseminated by her doctor. Throughout the show, Jane struggles with being pregnant and having to derail and replan her life. Being a telenovela, A LOT of drama ensues, but the show is more than that. It shows a young and strong hispanic woman finding herself and planning for a family while still chasing her dream. It tackles love, immigration and mother-daughter relationships. It is a must see show!

While Supergirl was truly super (She was stronger and faster than her cousin after all), The show follows Cara juggling work, life and being a superhero, all at once. The show is packed with kickass women, including Cara’s sister, who is a secret agent and Cat Grant her boss, who is a self made, fierce, literal boss babe. Supergirl just got picked up by the CW, expanding their superhero universe. Supergirl will be the only female superhero on the CW, and seeing what they have done with The Flash, The Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow, the best is yet to come.

The Mindy Project:

After starring and being a writer for The Office, Mindy Kaling went on to produce and star in her own show, The Mindy Project. In the show, Mindy is the only female out of three co-owners of a private medical practice. Much like in real life, TV Mindy is unapologetically herself. She, much like Meredith fights for what she wants career wise. She is not afraid to voice her opinion when she thinks something needs to change. The best thing about this show is how real Mindy is. She speaks her mind about who she is. About life and being a woman of color. She doesn’t care about other people’s opinions and just lives her life the way she wants to.

There are so many other shows out there with leading ladies. I would love to list and write about them all, but that would turn into a book! I love seeing girl bosses such as these on TV. As a young woman,it gives me role models to look up to. Give these shows a gander and see if you feel the same way. Happy binge watching!

4 Things About Yourself You Should Never Change for Anyone

“Don’t lower your standards for people who won’t raise theirs.”

When I was younger, I was always obsessed  with what people thought of me. I always wanted to please people, and I was willing to do anything or be anything. I was willing to change whatever I had to to be liked. I hadn’t yet learned that my opinion mattered most. It was the only opinion I needed to be worried about. I hadn’t yet realized that I could dress, think, believe however I wanted to, but that at the end of the day, I was the one who needed to be happy with myself.

My self confidence came later in life. It was one of the best wake up calls/epiphany I had ever had. I started to realize that I didn’t have to change for anyone. I didn’t WANT to change for anyone. I could try to please people all I wanted, but there was always going to be someone who had a problem with me. I could never please everyone. It was then I started dressing for me and me only. I had to be comfortable with how I dressed and who I was, no matter what anyone thought. When someone asks me if I’m dressing for someone, I simply tell them that the only person I ever dress for is me. I won’t change that for anyone. Here are 4 things things that you should never, ever change for anyone, no matter who they are.

  • Your Personality

Your personality is who you are. It’s what makes you unique. It’s like your fingerprint. Everyone has one. No two fingerprints are alike. It’s what makes you different and special. When someone decides to Love you, they commit to loving ALL of you. All your quirks and triggers. All your habits. Good or bad. When someone asks you to change the one thing about you that makes you different and unique, they are asking you to be someone else. Someone that you are not. Someone who doesn’t appreciate who you ARE does not deserve YOU, in any shape, way or form.

  • Your Opinions/Beliefs

Changing your beliefs for someone isn’t only lying to that person, but it’s also lying to yourself. My mother used to tell me that lying didn’t affect other people. They would get on with their life. The only one truly affected by your lies was you. You would go through life deceiving yourself, believing the lives. In the end, you’re the one who ends up with the realization that you are not who you thought you were. You were the one left confused and unsure of yourself. The amazing thing about an opinion is that it can never be wrong. No one can ever be mad at you for something that you think or believe in. Don’t ever let anyone tell you to change your opinion or that it’s wrong, because it can never be wrong (it can never also be right, that’s just how it is). It can just be you.

  • Your Dreams/ Career

Dreams are such amazing things. For some people, it’s the only thing that keeps them going. To have a dream is to believe that you can make something of yourself. There is no such thing as a bad dream. Nor  one small enough. Your dreams show just how fierce and strong you are. It shows how hard of a worker you are, that you are a force to be reckoned with, and that should no one ever get in your way. Never let anyone tell you your dream is stupid. Or tell you to get another dream. It is NOT okay to make someone give up on anything ever. If anything, they should encourage you and do whatever they can to help you make your dream come true. They should talk you up. Shoot for the moon and the stars. Heck, shoot for the whole univere and don’t let ANYONE or anything get in your way!

  • Your Body/Appearance

When I think about how I used to look at myself and what I used to think about my appearance and my body, it’s impossible for me to imagine someone that Loves me thinking about me that way. I want someone who looks at my body and loves me anyway. Someone who doesn’t mind that my jaw is a little crooked. That the third degree burns on my hand and thigh won’t go away. Someone who won’t be afraid to caress them and love them, just as they are. Someone who sees all my “curves and all my edges” and loves me even more for them. I think about what a journey it was to come to terms with with how I looked. It took a lot of Love and courage for me to look in the mirror and say “This is who I am, and that’s okay”. I could never imagine someone breaking down my progress and telling me to go back and change it all. It took a lot for me to get here and I sure as hell won’t let someone tell me otherwise.

We were made how we are for a reason. If we were meant to look a different way and act a different way and be a different way, we would have been made that way. There are things that make you, well you. Know who you are and know what you are willing to change about yourself. Know who you would or should be willing to change for. Change is not always a bad thing. Sometimes it’s just exactly what our lives need. Just know that they are some things you should and should not change. For anyone. Ever.  You are beautiful and imperfectly perfect just the way you are!

Valentine’s Day!

I’m not a big fan of Valentine’s Day really, but I love any excuse to wear pink and look all cute. Strangely enough, for someone whose favorite color is Pink, I don’t have a lot of pink things in my closet. But….luckily, I found enough items to put together these 3 valentine’s Day looks!
